EngageDirect – Weekly free taster session every Wednesday during term time in the UK

EngageDirect is offering a free taster session to any teacher wanting that practical experience of using EngageLive or EngageDirect. To take part visit www.engagedirect.net and follow the links for the Free Taster Session. These sessions are live each Wednesday from 3.30pm to 5pm.

Other times are possible, just let us know what you need.

Suffolk Skillz

E-nage has been working with Suffolk Police, BT, Port of Felixstowe and others in a week long practical introduction to the world of work for pupils at Suffolk Secondary Schools. Using E-ngage students are simulating the role of officers the Control Room of Suffolk Police and learning about the role of the police and some of the issues they face as they carry out their duties.

The week has been a great success and E-ngage are able to offer the activity to other police forces who are looking for a practical way of engaging with young people on the role of the police.

E-ngage exhibited at the TES Show at Olympia

E-ngage exhibited at the TES Show at Olympia in London on the 9th and 10th October, the team at the show just wanted to say hello to all those they met, it was great to meet you and we look forward to working with many of you in the near future. Anti Bullying

As a member organisation of the Anti Bullying Alliance E-ngage is working on several new projects on the theme of Anti Bullying including two new activities written in association with ABA members.
 
There is a whole programme of events running throughout November on Anti Bullying, there will be some old favourites as well as new material among the activities.

Cybersmart

The Australian Communications and Media Authority working with E-ngage launched their latest State on the Cybersmart national programme in Queensland on 12th September. Graham Rodrick the ACMA Senior Advisor said, ‘This is a great programme that has really taken off in Australia and we aim to have every child on Australia taking part in the near future’.

Summer holidays

June and July have been very busy months with EngageLive and other projects running every day and a larger number of students taking part in sessions. With the summer term now nearing the end, plans are already being made with a larger number of agencies than in previous years to for the programme for the new school year.

Eight authorities throughout the UK are planning online lessons for Anti Bullying Week, but there is still some limited times and dates available during the week itself.

New activities are being written and planned now, so you can watch the news over the summer and plan for your sessions in 2008-09.

As schools in England break up for the summer holiday we hope you all have a a great holiday and remembering some of the lessons learned during the year, please keep safe.

We look forward to working with you all again when the school returns in September.

E2BN Conference

E-ngage will be running a workshop at the E2BN Conference on 24th and 25th June at the Robinson Centre, Wyboston, Beds MK44 3AR see http://conference.e2bn.org/index.php. This will be a practical session so bring a laptop if you can, with the opportunity to follow up in the classroom in the weeks after the conference itself.

EngageLive awarded diploma for excellence

David Casey and Ruth Dixon attended the finals of the Stockholm Challenge last week in a very sunny Stockholm. EngageLive was awarded a diploma for excellence in the use of information technology in the education category. This follows last year's award of the Global Junior Challenge Trophy in Rome.

David Casey and Ruth Dixon are in Stockholm from 19th to 23rd May as finalists in the Stockholm Challenge. The Awards are to be announced at a gala event on Thursday 22nd in the City Hall Stockholm.

E-ngage is working with ELearning@Luton to develop a new series of new resources for online learning.

The City Learning Centre video and animation workshop weekend is one of a number of opportunities for students to be highly creative with new technology. Over this weekend they are using their multi media skills in to create new resources to teach young children about keep safe online in an EngageLive activity to be used in Luton during Anti Bullying Week 2008.

Agencies in Luton will be using the work of the students over the weekend as part of the ongoing programme to address bullying in the Borough.

This is one of a number of projects with which E-ngage is working with students to create innovative content for other students.

David Casey Managing Director of E-ngage said,

“Young people are prepared for the challenge, they know what the issues are and can put the correct messages across in a fresh and imaginative way. Given the opportunity to do so most accept the responsibility willingly and feel they are making a valuable contribution to a safer society, which they are.”

Safer Internet Day activities

Following the Safer Internet Day activities, and a very large number of requests to take part in future events there are a series of repeats of this activity proposed to run between now and July. If you are interested in this opportunity contact EngageDirect at direct@e-ngage.net.

A new series of activities under the broad title is planned for the summer, this will look at various issues related to the long summer holiday, water safety, road safety and safety in the countryside and in the town and city. Watch out for news of the events.

Criminal Justice system activities

Following the success of Inside Justice Week activities a new series of online activities on issues related to the Criminal Justice system is now available. Your students can learn about the law taking on the role of a Magistrate and hearing the evidence. Work on the gathering of forensic evidence including live DNA fingerprinting in the classroom, all live with the experts online. Project comes with a full forensic science tool kit with equipment. Safer Internet day

Safer Internet day on 12th February was an opportunity for a number of E-ngage partners to deliver new activities which were repeated on 19th due to school holidays. E2BN the Eastern Region Broadband Consortium used the opportunity to as a key element in their E-Safety strategy.

This series of activities proved to be very popular and some of the events appeared on the Look East News BBC new programme for the region.

The event gave children to look at the issue of online safety from a different point of view and the response was overwhelmingly positive, and the response from the teachers gave a strong impression of the impact that the online session had. One teacher commented, “Thank you for today’s session the children really understood the impact of doing the wrong thing online and saw how important the issue is for them.

Events similar to this make up part of the programme of events for EngageDirect over the coming month.

Australian Communications and Media Authority promote E-safety

In Australia the Australian Communications and Media Authority plan a major national day of online activities to promote E-safety. With a full programme of activities already running in Western Australia and with the state of Victoria shortly to start Safer Internet Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the issues and to highlight the national role out of the live Cybersmart programme.

E2BN the Regional Broadband consortium for the East of England is working with E-ngage to provide a series of online activities on the issue of E-Safety as part of their E-Safety initiative and following on from the E2BN E-Safety conference of 5th December. Another exciting activity has been created by Cambridgeshire Police working with Cambridgeshire Starz and the Bottisham Circle Link schools.

The bike theft from Upware has been the latest enquiry to be conducted online with E-ngageLive. Cambridgeshire pupils have been carrying out their enquiries to assist the police and have been doing so online and for some following this up with a visit to the scene to carry out some forensic tests to support the enquiry...
